Intrauterine insemination (IUI Treatment) is an advanced form of treatment that involves injecting sperm inside a woman’s uterus to facilitate fertilization of the egg.

How is it done?

Intrauterine insemination is always done when the female partner ovulates. After the doctor has made sure that you are about to ovulate, then he asks the male partner to provide a sample of his semen. To increase the sperm count, the doctor usually asks the couple to stay away from intercourse for a couple of days before the procedure. With an hour of ejaculation, the sperm is washed. The most active sperm is separated from the specimen in the laboratory with the help of various chemicals. Centrifugation is usually done to collect the best sperm.

Why is it done?

  • When a woman uses donor sperm to conceive her baby, frozen sperm specimens are collected from the labs and defrosted prior to the intrauterine insemination procedure.
  • If you have already conducted all possible tests but have not got any results regarding the reason for your infertility then you can go for IUI.
  • You find difficult to have intercourse due to some anatomical abnormality.
  • If parents have some deadly disease like HIV, they have to choose sperm washing to avoid the risk of passing on the disease to their potential child.
  • In endometriosis infertility, using different medications to have a good quality egg with IUI is a better treatment process.
  • If a women’s cervical mucus is so thick that it blocks the passage of the sperm then IUI process allows the sperm to directly enter into the uterus.
  • If the sperm does not meet the desired qualifications of being of the best quality, then preparing sperm for IUI produces highly motile normal sperm.
  • If a woman has an allergy to her partner’s semen then during intercourse, she may experience redness, swelling or even itching. You can stay away from all this by using a condom. But then again, using a condom means stopping pregnancy. So if you want to become pregnant, then the best thing that you can do is to opt for intrauterine insemination.
